Pettit Protect is a corrosion protection primer engineered for underwater metals, including bare steel, bare aluminum, and lead keels. It is supplied in a 1 gallon container in grey. Pettit Protect also functions as an excellent primer for corrosion protection on all underwater metals, and when combined with Aluma Protect it forms a complete corrosion protection system for aluminum hulls, from pontoon boats to superyachts.
Surface preparation depends on the substrate. For bare steel, sandblast to SSPC-SP 6 commercial blast, blow off residue with clean compressed air, and immediately apply three coats of Pettit Protect, or hand sand with 80 grit sandpaper (or power hand tool), remove residue, apply one coat of Pettit 6980 Rustlok Steel Primer, let it reach a tack-free state, then apply three coats of Pettit Protect within 2 hours of the Rustlok Primer application. For bare aluminum, sandblast with non-metallic media or disc sand to clean bright metal, wipe clean, apply one thin coat of Pettit 6455/044 Metal Primer, let dry a minimum of 8 hours (maximum 48 hours), then apply three coats of Pettit Protect. For lead keels, disc sand or abrade to bright metal, clean off residue, apply one thin coat of 6455/044 Metal Primer, let dry 8 hours, then apply one coat of Pettit Protect.
