Its high-solids formula lays down a thick film in fewer coats than typical barrier systems, reducing water absorption into the laminate and making it a strong choice for osmotic blister prevention and blister repair below the waterline. Beyond fiberglass hulls, Pettit Protect also provides dependable corrosion protection on underwater metals, including steel, aluminum, and other metal surfaces, and can be applied over lead or steel/cast iron keels once properly prepared.
Application follows a defined surface-prep and buildup sequence: bare lead keels are abraded to bright metal and primed with Metal Primer before Pettit Protect is applied; bare steel or cast iron keels are abraded and primed with Rustlok Steel Primer, allowed to dry only 1/2 to 2 hours before overcoating. Where fairing is needed, Pettit 7050 EZ-Fair Epoxy Fairing Compound is applied between coats and sanded smooth. Pettit Protect can also be recoated directly over sound existing two-part epoxy finishes after brush-off sandblasting or heavy sanding, while finishes in poor condition, one-package primers, and bottom paints must be removed entirely first.
