Pettit Rustlok Steel Primer is a metal primer formulated for use on steel and cast iron marine surfaces, most commonly steel or cast iron keels, ahead of topcoating with Pettit Protect antifouling paint. It is supplied in a 1 gallon container.
To apply, disc sand or otherwise abrade the steel or cast iron surface to bright metal and clean off all residue. Apply one coat of Rustlok Steel Primer directly to the prepared metal. The primer must then be allowed to dry only 1/2 to 2 hours before overcoating with Pettit Protect - no more, no less - to maintain proper adhesion between coats. Once the Pettit Protect coat has dried to recoat, and if fairing is required, Pettit 7050 EZ-Fair Epoxy Fairing Compound can be applied, sanded smooth, and followed with two additional coats of Pettit Protect per label directions.
