Pettit Rustlok Steel Primer is a one package, moisture cured polyurethane coating formulated for application directly over steel or cast iron surfaces, including galvanized and stainless steel. The formula contains aluminum flake pigment that forms a dense, water impervious barrier over the metal, giving excellent corrosion protection in a marine environment. Rustlok's polyurethane chemistry provides strong adhesive strength and wetting ability, which allows it to perform well even when applied over surfaces that already show some rust.
Rustlok Steel Primer is designed as a preparatory coat ahead of Pettit Protect on keels and other steel or cast iron parts. On bare steel or cast iron, disc sand or otherwise abrade the surface to bright metal and clean off all residue, then apply one coat of Rustlok Steel Primer and allow it to dry only 1/2 to 2 hours before overcoating with Pettit Protect (no more, no less). If fairing is required after the Pettit Protect coat has dried, Pettit 7050 EZ-Fair Epoxy Fairing Compound can be sanded smooth and followed with two additional coats of Pettit Protect. The primer can be applied by brush, roller, or spray and covers approximately 350 square feet per gallon at the recommended 3 coats.
