The surface mount bases let it install directly onto flat or gently curved decks, hulls, and cabin tops using two 5/16 inch flat head fasteners (not included) per base, so there is no need to drill through the hull for a backing plate. A 1 inch tube diameter provides a secure, comfortable grip for hands of all sizes when boarding, climbing, or steadying yourself in rough water.
